Help for Welsh community hit by cost of living crisis
Residents of a housing estate in Wales are being helped through the cost of living crisis by a project supported with funding made possible by National Lottery players.
We Are Plas Madoc – a project on the Plas Madoc housing estate about 8 miles from Wrexham – have used the funding to acquire 2 electric vehicles to allow people without transport to shop for food and access health services. The funding has also enabled We Are Plas Madoc to extend its Kettle Club breakfast and lunch club, allowing more people struggling to afford heating to take advantage of a warm, safe space.
Claire Pugh, Plas Madoc Community Manager, has been helping people in the area for 16 years and believes the current economic climate is as tough as it has ever been. She said, “People have inevitably struggled due to the rising cost of living. There is a lack of affordable, good quality food available within our community and residents have to travel to access shopping and health services. The [electric car] scheme has allowed people to get to the places that they might not otherwise have been able to and really opened up the world to them.”
Claire said The Kettle Club is also a vital resource for those badly affected by the cost of living crisis. She said, “It has been great because we know that our parents do everything for their children, making sure they’re warm and fed, but sometimes they may not have that same opportunity.”
