£1Million winner Maxine gives ‘tote-all’ support to women with cancer
Maxine Lloyd was having radiotherapy for breast cancer when she learned she had won £1Million on The National Lottery. Now, she and a group of fellow National Lottery winners have spent a day helping out Breast Friends Northamptonshire, the project that supported Maxine during her treatment.
Maxine, from Kettering, received a Breast Friends Northamptonshire treatment bag full of feel-good items like cosmetics, a blanket, a water bottle and even fluffy socks. She said, “When I opened mine it was like a ‘hug in a bag’. I had this support and kindness from people I had never met but knew exactly what I needed, and I will be forever grateful. They do an amazing job and it’s now my turn to give back after my good fortune.”
Maxine and a group of mums, daughters and grandmothers affected by breast cancer, spent a day helping Breast Friends Northamptonshire creating treatment bags for women coping with the disease. As well as packing the bags and providing the contents, the National Lottery winners hosted an afternoon tea for Breast Friends Northamptonshire’s team of volunteers.
Breast Friends Northamptonshire was started by Leonie Heard in 2017 after she had treatment for breast cancer. Leonie and her team of volunteers run workshops and organise day trips and various other events for women during and after their treatment.
Leonie and her volunteers also create several different treatment bags, each one tailored for women undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
One of the National Lottery winners helping Maxine was Tracy Field from Essex. She also battled breast cancer before winning £2.5Million on The National Lottery in 2008.
Tracy said, “It was a very difficult time for me. I had 2 operations and 6 months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The support I received helped me get through the dark times.
“The work Breast Friends Northamptonshire and many other projects across the UK do every single day is amazing and I applaud each and every one of these amazing and caring volunteers. They are angels and when Maxine asked for help, I was only too happy to support.”
Leonie said, “Some of the winners have been on a challenging journey themselves, others have helped because they feel the need to. Whatever their circumstances, I just want to thank them all.”
